This paper proposes to raise for discussion several fundamental issues in sociological study and to suggest a point of view. The issues raised are much beyond my present capacity to resolve succesfully. The purpose of the paper is to make explicit certain of the difficulties that appear to me to be major, and to trust that, along with others who may be engaged in similar enquiries, we may mutually aid each other in seeing our way through.
